5 Signs Your Car's Brakes May Need Attention

Your vehicle's braking system is one of the most important safety features on your car. Worn brake pads, damaged rotors, or other brake issues can reduce stopping performance and put you and other road users at risk. Here are five common signs that your brakes may need attention.

1. Squealing or screeching noises

A persistent high-pitched squealing noise when braking can be a sign that your brakes need attention. Some brake pads include a wear indicator that can produce this sound as the pads become thin. Squealing can have other causes too, so regular or persistent noise should be inspected.

2. Grinding sounds

Persistent grinding or metal-on-metal noise can indicate that brake pads have worn away and metal components are contacting the rotor. Grinding can have other causes too, but it should be inspected promptly because continuing to drive may damage other brake components and reduce braking performance.

3. A spongy or soft brake pedal

If your brake pedal feels soft, spongy, or sinks further than normal when pressed, there may be a problem within the braking system. Air in the brake lines, contaminated brake fluid, fluid leaks, or other faults can all affect pedal feel and braking performance. Any noticeable change in how your brake pedal feels should be investigated as soon as possible.

4. Vibrations when braking

Feeling a vibration or pulsation through the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking may indicate an issue such as uneven rotor surfaces. Brake, wheel or suspension issues can also cause vibration, so it is worth having the vehicle inspected.

5. Brake warning light or low brake fluid

Many vehicles have brake warning lights that can alert you to a problem. Low brake fluid or other brake-system faults may trigger a dashboard warning, and some vehicles also have pad-wear alerts. Never ignore a brake warning, as it could indicate a safety-critical issue.

Don't ignore brake problems

Brake issues rarely improve on their own. Addressing problems early can help prevent more expensive repairs and ensure your vehicle remains safe on the road. Regular brake inspections are recommended, especially if you notice any unusual noises, vibrations, warning lights, or changes in braking performance.
